Bachookheh wrestling is among the most well-known local sports in Iran and has had a long history in Khorasan. It has been gaining great importance from locals since past times and efforts have been done to train Bachookheh wrestlers. Traditionally, this wrestling was held at wedding ceremonies during Norooz, the Iranian New Year.
Chookheh, in fact, was the garment of shepherds and the ancient outfit of Kurds of Khorasan.
The wrestling is held on a ring covered by soft soil or grass in different seasons and is viewed by large number of spectators including men and women at different ages. However, the main tournament is held on April 2 at Zeinal Khan Spring in the city of Esfarayen which is the city of origin of Bachookheh wrestling.
